Our Story

Royal Otter began in 2014 when a group of backcountry enthusiasts decided that more travellers deserved access to Canada's remote wilderness. What started as informal guided hikes in the Rockies has grown into a full-service adventure company operating across seven provinces and two territories.

We remain a small team by choice. Every guide on our roster has logged thousands of hours in the backcountry and holds certifications in wilderness first response, avalanche safety, and Leave No Trace principles. Our intimate group sizes ensure personalized attention and minimize our footprint on sensitive ecosystems.

The name Royal Otter pays homage to the playful river otters we often encounter on our Pacific coast expeditions. Their curiosity and adaptability mirror the spirit we hope to inspire in every traveller who joins us.

Our Core Values

Safety First

Every expedition is planned with meticulous attention to risk management. Our guides carry satellite communication devices and maintain current certifications in emergency response protocols.

Environmental Stewardship

We operate under strict Leave No Trace guidelines and contribute a portion of every booking to conservation organizations working to protect Canadian wilderness areas.

Authentic Connections

We partner with Indigenous communities and local experts to offer experiences that honour traditional knowledge and support regional economies.

What Sets Us Apart

Unlike large tour operators that shuttle hundreds of visitors through popular landmarks, we specialize in accessing areas that most travellers never see. Our permits and relationships with park authorities grant us entry to restricted zones where wildlife roams undisturbed and trails remain untraveled.

Meals on our expeditions are prepared fresh by guides trained in backcountry cuisine. We source ingredients from local producers and accommodate dietary restrictions with care. A campfire dinner beneath the stars, prepared with regional ingredients, is as memorable as the landscapes themselves.
